17 Must-Knows For a Mommy Makeover

Introduction

Motherhood is one of the most beautiful and rewarding experiences one could experience in life. Sure, it does end up taking a heavy toll on your body, but there is nothing to worry about as a Mommy Makeover procedure can give you back your pre-pregnancy body using different cosmetic surgical enhancement techniques.

It doesn't matter whether it is those nasty and stubborn unwanted fat deposits or loose abdominal skin, stretch marks, a saggy or droopy breast appearance, or premature facial aging, a Mommy Makeover can transform you.

However, you need to consider several measures before opting for a Mommy Makeover. Let’s dive straight into them!

1. Your plastic surgeon should be a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon with 5 star ratings and excellent before and after Photos

Don't fall for pressure sales tactics - choose the right plastic surgeon!

Only a competent surgeon can guide you when it comes to breast and body procedures, risks, and post-procedural care. Therefore, make sure you opt for a certified surgeon from the American Board of Plastic Surgery with a 5-star rating and an excellent portfolio. to learn more check out our blog article on what to look for and warning signs.

2. What is included in a Mommy Makeover Surgery?

“Mommy Makeover” surgery can be a mix of procedures including a breast lift or breast augmentation, liposuction, tummy tuck, fat injections (butt and/or breasts), and even vaginal rejuvenation. For cost and recovery reasons, these procedures are combined into a single operation. The most common “Mommy Makeover” combination is a breast augmentation with a tummy tuck and liposuction. Many patients find that the results are incredible and, with the right surgeon, often life-changing.

3. How does your surgeon deal with complications?

Asking this question will provide you with a clear picture of your doctor’s competency. Make it a point to ask your surgeon how he has dealt with complications during and after mommy makeover surgeries.

4. What types of breast implants are available?

If planning to augment breast volume, make sure to go through the various types of breast implants during your consultation session to know what will be the best fit for you. To put it in perspective, some common types are saline, silicone, gummy bear, and teardrop. Also breast fat transfer is another technique to improve breast volume.

5. Safety

It is pertinent to mention that breast implants are by no means lifetime devices, and can lead to numerous issues. Therefore, it is important to thoroughly discuss the implants your surgeon plans to use and question him as to why those are his choice to ensure safety.

6. Get to know about above and below the muscle implants

Above or below muscle refers to an extra layer. Women with thin breast tissues can opt for above the muscle implants. On the other hand, women with thick and fuller breasts can opt for below the muscle implants.
An expert surgeon will be able to guide you correctly on this.

7. Who is an ideal candidate for a mommy makeover?

At Alamo Plastic Surgery for patient safety and to limit complications from healing, we recommend patients have be a 30 or below Body Mass Index (BMI) and at a stable weight (same weight for at least 6 months). A tummy tuck will remove excess skin and through liposuction a plastic surgeon can contour the body to accentuate your curves. In certain cases it can remove pockets of unwanted fat. In extreme cases, patients may lose 15 pounds but on average it is close to 5 pounds or less. Sometimes patients are advised to lose weight before the procedure. We also recommend you be finished having children. Your plastic surgeon will also evaluate your overall physical health, medical history, and lifestyle.

8. Estimated Recovery time

All plastic surgeons have different recovery protocols; feel free to discuss this beforehand. To give you a rough estimate, expect the recovery time to be about six weeks. Experts recommend that you wear compression garments and recovery bras after the surgery is completed.

9. Results

As the proverb goes, good things come to those who wait. The healing process takes time.  The initial swelling from surgery is the body’s response to inflammation caused by surgical injury. When a surgically created space is made and inflammation is present, the body will allow clear fluid (serous fluid) from your circulation to move into the space. Swelling may take as long as 3-5 months after surgery to completely resolve and reveal your postoperative figure. Additionally, the scars will continue to mature their appearance over 8-12 month time period.

10. Maintenance of the results

It is important to understand that a surgery cannot stop nature's biological processes. Hence, it is recommended that you wear breast support at all times to extend the longevity of your breast enhancement surgery and maintain a healthy weight and diet.

11. Is undergoing a breast lift important alongside a breast enhancement?

It depends on you whether or not you are looking for more volume. Other than this, your surgeon, after assessing your breast tissues, will be able to guide you accordingly. However, if your surgeon finds the position of your nipple below the breast’s fold, he will most likely recommend a breast lift, coupled with an implant.

12. Could there be complications?

Like with any other surgery, a mommy makeover may have complications. Therefore, do ask your surgeon about all the potential complications before undergoing surgery to avoid any mishaps.

13. Average mommy makeover cost

This is quite an important question as the costs may vary depending upon the procedures you choose. At Alamo Plastic Surgery for a tummy tuck with breast implants (no lift) the cost ranges from $8000 - $10,400.

14. The post-surgery clothing

You should wear post operative clothing at all times after undergoing breast augmentation and reduction surgeries. Your surgeon will tell you how long you should wear it.

15. You may feel emotional

A Mommy Makeover is a major surgery. It is normal to need time to adjust and recover from the surgery and the changes to your body.

16. How painful is the entire process?

The surgery will be conducted under general anesthesia so you will be asleep during the surgery. After waking up from the surgery, however, it is important to follow your surgeon's guidance on taking pain medication to manage the pain. You will experience bruising and swelling and you may feel slightly weak and lethargic as your body heals.

17. How long does the surgery last?

A typical mommy makeover surgery is ~6 hours.  It can range from 4-10 hours depending on the procedure you choose. Usually after a 6 hours surgery most facilities want you to stay overnight for monitoring. Make sure to ask your plastic surgeon about this so that you are mentally prepared.
